Participation of the 9th World Assembly of Religions for Peace
Al-Hakim Foundation participated in the 9th World Assembly for RFP which started on Nov. 19th, which
brought together more than 600 religious leaders representing Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu,
Indigenous, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Shinto, and Zoroastrian communities. At the opening session,
members of each represented faith at the assembly stood on stage and welcomed the delegates.
Every 5-6 years, Religions for Peace convenes a World Assembly of religious leaders for the purpose of
forging a deep moral consensus on contemporary challenges, electing a new World Council, and
advancing multi-religious action across and beyond the Religions for Peace network.
This year RfP convened its 9th World Assembly from 20-22 November 2013 in Vienna, Austria
Being the largest Iraqi FBO organization, Al-Hakim Foundation participated in this International event. Ms.
Layla Al-Khafaji (Director of International Relations) for Al-Hakim Foundation, shared her story during the
Conflict Prevention and Transformation Committee Meeting of being tortured and imprisoned in Iraq for
11 years for opposing the Sadam Hussein regime. She noted that, "Taking away a person's freedom and
human dignity is a root of conflict.
Ms. Al-Khafaji was elected in this conference as a member of International Women Committee for
Religions for peace.
Mr. Ali Al-Muayad (23 years old) represented the foundation at the Youth Assembly which took place in the
parallel of this Conference.
